Why to long-term monitor radon in your home

Radon testing is crucial all year round.
Even with prior radon mitigation, radon issues can resurface via faulty vents, cracks in foundations, broken fans and many other ways.
Radon might not be confined to your basement.
Radon in the basement is a common problem, but it can also be present in your living room or other unexpected areas in your home. Utilizing two or more air quality monitors to cover several rooms in your home can provide a comprehensive view of your home and enable you to compare results.

Why two monitors, not one

Radon enters in the basement. Your family lives upstairs.

Radon levels vary by floor, by season, and by ventilation. A single monitor in one room of your home cannot tell you what you're actually breathing in the rooms that matter most. The Airthings View Plus + View Radon bundle covers both — the basement where radon enters, and the living room where your family spends time.

Basement — where radon enters

Radon is a radioactive gas that seeps from soil and bedrock through cracks, floors, and foundations. Basements and ground floors typically see the highest concentrations because radon enters from the ground below. The EPA estimates 1 in 15 US homes has radon levels at or above the 4 pCi/L action level — and basements are where it shows up first.

Living room — where your family breathes

The living room is typically where families spend the most time together, which makes it the room where indoor air quality has the largest cumulative impact. The Airthings View Plus tracks seven indicators here — radon, PM2.5, CO₂, VOCs, humidity, temperature, and air pressure — so you can see exactly what's in the air during family time, holidays, and everyday evenings.

The radon facts

  • EPA action level: 4 pCi/L. The US Environmental Protection Agency recommends taking action to reduce radon at or above 4 picocuries per liter.
  • About 1 in 15 US homes has radon at or above the action level (EPA). Risk varies by region and by individual home, which is why the EPA recommends every home be tested.
  • Top cause of lung cancer in non-smokers (EPA). Radon causes an estimated 21,000 lung cancer deaths per year in the US.
  • Radon levels fluctuate year-round. Sealed homes in fall and winter can trap radon inside; long-term monitoring captures the true exposure picture.

Setting up your monitors

Where should you place each monitor?

Place the Airthings View Radon in the lowest lived-in level of your home — typically the basement or ground floor. Place the Airthings View Plus in the living room, away from kitchens, bathrooms, and direct airflow from vents, windows, or doors.

  1. 1

Place View Radon in the basement

Position the Airthings View Radon in the lowest lived-in room of your home — finished basement, ground-floor bedroom, or family room. Keep it away from direct airflow sources like vents, fans, windows, and doors so the monitor reads representative air rather than drafts.

  2. 2

Place View Plus in the living room

Place the Airthings View Plus in the main living area, on a shelf, table, or wall-mounted near where your family actually spends time. Keep it away from the kitchen stove, fireplaces, candles, and HVAC vents — these sources can skew PM2.5, VOC, and temperature readings.

  3. 3

Connect both to the Airthings app

Download the Airthings app for iOS or Android and follow the in-app setup for each device. Both monitors appear in one dashboard with real-time readings, color-coded indicators, and historical graphs. The VOC and CO₂ sensors on the View Plus calibrate over the first 7 days of use.

Do

  • Place monitors in the rooms you spend the most time in.
  • Leave radon monitors in place for at least 7 days for a reliable short-term average.
  • Use long-term averages, not single readings, to understand true exposure — radon levels naturally fluctuate.

Don't

  • Place monitors in kitchens, bathrooms, or laundry rooms — humidity and cooking emissions skew readings.
  • Position within 3 feet of vents, fans, windows, or doors.
  • Panic over temporary radon spikes — investigate the long-term average instead.

Bundle FAQ

Questions before you buy

Straight answers about radon, placement, and how the Airthings View Plus + View Radon bundle compares to single-monitor setups.

Why do I need two monitors instead of one?
Radon levels vary significantly by floor and by room. Radon enters the home from the ground below, so basements and ground floors typically show higher concentrations than upper floors. The Airthings View Radon catches radon in the basement, while the Airthings View Plus tracks the seven indicators of indoor air quality in the living room. One monitor in one location cannot tell you what you breathe across the whole home.
What is a safe radon level in the home?
The US Environmental Protection Agency recommends taking action to reduce radon at or above 4 pCi/L (picocuries per liter). The EPA also notes that no level of radon is considered fully safe. The World Health Organization sets its reference level lower, at 2.7 pCi/L. Both the Airthings View Plus and View Radon report short- and long-term radon averages with color-coded indicators in the Airthings app.
Can radon be in the living room, not just the basement?
Yes. Radon can migrate upward through a home and reach living rooms, bedrooms, and upper floors. Levels vary by ventilation, season, and home construction. The Airthings View Plus tracks radon in the living room so you can see whether radon is contained to the basement or spreading into the rooms your family uses most.
Do I still need this if my home already has radon mitigation?
Yes. Mitigation systems can fail over time — fans break, vents clog, and renovations can disturb seals. The EPA recommends testing every home regardless of prior mitigation. The Airthings View Plus + View Radon bundle gives year-round, always-on monitoring on both floors so a change in radon levels doesn't go undetected.
How is this bundle different from the View Plus Duo?
The Airthings View Plus Duo includes two View Plus monitors — best when you want full seven-sensor coverage in two living spaces, such as the main floor and a primary bedroom. The View Plus + View Radon Bundle pairs one full-feature monitor with a radon-focused monitor at a lower price — best when one of the two rooms is a basement, where radon tracking is the priority and the broader sensor suite matters less.
Does the bundle require WiFi?
Both the Airthings View Plus and View Radon connect to home WiFi for remote readings and notifications in the Airthings app. Both monitors also display current readings directly on their ePaper screens, so you can check air quality without the app. Bluetooth is used for setup.
Is the bundle FSA and HSA eligible?
Yes. The Airthings View Plus + View Radon Bundle is eligible for purchase with pre-tax FSA and HSA dollars through Truemed. After purchase, complete a short Truemed intake form to qualify. If approved, Truemed sends a Letter of Medical Necessity within 24 hours, which you then submit to your FSA or HSA provider for reimbursement.
How long do the batteries last?
The Airthings View Plus runs on 6 AA batteries with up to 2 years of battery life. The Airthings View Radon offers up to 3 years of battery life on AA batteries. The View Plus supports optional USB-C power; the View Radon supports optional USB power for permanently mounted installations.
What warranty comes with the bundle?
The Airthings View Plus + View Radon Bundle includes a standard manufacturer warranty plus a free 5-year extended warranty when you register each device within 30 days of purchase at airthings.com. Registration is free and does not affect your statutory rights.
