Building on its Widely-Successful Canadian-Based Library Program, Airthings is Now Partnering with Libraries Across the US to Make Radon Monitoring More Accessible Than Ever.
OSLO, NORWAY & SUTTON, MA - (January 13, 2026) - Airthings, creators of the best-selling indoor air quality and radon monitors trusted by more than one million homeowners worldwide, has officially launched its first-ever United States-based library lender program, in recognition of National US Radon Action Month in January. As part of Airthings’ mission to educate the world to breathe better, the company is partnering with local libraries in high-risk radon locations across America, offering them the opportunity to serve their local communities on the importance of continuous radon monitoring. With the new program, residents can rent out Airthings’ Corentium Home, the world’s most-trusted digital radon detector, like a book, and test their home’s radon levels for weeks - giving local families free access to technology that can reduce the risk of lung cancer.
Nearly 25% of the US population lives in areas exposed to unsafe radon levels. Long-term exposure to high levels of odorless, colorless radon gas remains a silent killer, and is the leading cause of lung cancer for nonsmokers each year in both the US and Canada. Even though radon is a widespread health risk, three out of four Americans have never tested their home for radon, according to an SSRS survey1. This is despite radon being responsible for over 21,000 deaths annually in the US alone2. As radon levels fluctuate over time due to various factors, monitoring continuously over time is a great way to get an accurate overall picture of your home's average radon levels, rather than relying on a one-off test. The longer you measure for, the better the results will reflect your home radon levels.
This is where Airthings’ products come in. Airthings’ Corentium Home is the world’s best-selling, most trusted digital radon detector. The product’s simplicity, accuracy and reliability have made it the market-leading, battery-operated digital radon detector for homeowners who want to stay in control of their radon levels. As part of the newly-launched US Library Lender Program, Airthings is donating Corentium Home devices to its library partners free-of-charge, along with a collection of educational materials and instructions, enabling residents to access continuous monitoring for perhaps the first time so that they can understand their home’s exposure to cancer-causing radon gas.
"As part of our commitment to helping people breathe better, raising awareness about the importance of radon monitoring is a top priority for Airthings. We're extremely proud of the success of our previous library lending programs, which have helped people in many communities gain access to radon testing,” said Ivar Kroghrud, CEO of Airthings. "We believe that every home should measure radon, so we're delighted that during National Radon Action Month, even more monitors will be available for people to borrow and test their homes."
With a goal of establishing partner libraries in several states across the US, Airthings’ initial partners for the program include libraries in Pennsylvania and Illinois, including the Westmoreland County Library system, which is home to 26 total public libraries across Western Pennsylvania, the Radnor Public Library, and multiple branches of the Chicago Public Library. “We are delighted to begin offering Airthings’ potentially lifesaving technology to our patrons through our library system,” said Naomi Cross, Executive Director, Westmoreland County Libraries. “Radon is a serious issue in Western Pennsylvania due to our geology and our older homes, and many people either aren’t aware of it or lack the resources to understand how it can impact their lives. Thanks to this new program, residents in our area will not only now have affordable access to technology that can change that, but also the educational materials and information that will equip them to take action against radon in the future. We’re very grateful to Airthings for approaching us about this program, and are confident that it will change lives for the better.”
Originally developed in Norway ten years ago, Airthings’ first library lender program demonstrated how libraries—trusted, neutral community spaces, can help remove those barriers to households that might not otherwise test. The model was soon after adopted in Canada, and is now offered through participating libraries in communities across the country, where it’s been embraced with massive popularity and formally recognized by Health Canada, with the Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program and Take Action on Radon serving as organizations providing independent and impartial oversight. “Through partnerships with libraries and community stakeholders, our Canadian Library Program has raised local awareness and encouraged informed action around radon exposure for thousands of individuals and families,” said Julie Girardeau, Airthings Library Lending Program Coordinator in Canada. “We are proud to be part of this movement and to give back by supporting an initiative that helps increase awareness and the understanding of radon exposure.”
Currently available in roughly 30 libraries in Pennsylvania and Illinois, Airthings anticipates continued expansion of its library lender program into additional US markets and locations in 2026.
