Why Airthings

Built by scientists, trusted in 300,000+ homes

Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. The EPA estimates it kills roughly 21,000 Americans every year, most without ever knowing they were at risk. We started Airthings because you shouldn't need a lab to know your air.

Our story

Founded by scientists to give homeowners more control

Radon testing hadn't changed in nearly 30 years. The options were to either call a professional or mail in a single-use charcoal test and wait weeks for the results. Both only provided a one-off reading, rather than the long-term average that truly reflects fluctuating radon levels.

A group of scientists working at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, saw this gap and in 2008 founded the company that would become Airthings, with a mission to give homeowners accurate data and more control over their indoor air.

Nearly two decades later, we're still led by scientists and engineers, still headquartered in Oslo, and still chasing the same goal: air quality data that's accurate enough to trust and simple enough to act on.

The science

Accurate data you can rely on

Airthings monitors use proven, lab-tested sensors to give you a true picture of your air quality.

Radon

A passive diffusion chamber and alpha spectrometry, the same proprietary radon sensor design trusted by homeowners and professionals since 2011.

PM2.5

A laser-scattering optical particle counter, calibrated against a GRIMM reference instrument, the benchmark for particulate accuracy.

CO₂

An NDIR (non-dispersive infrared) sensor, the same core technology used in professional-grade air quality equipment.

Nearly two decades of dedicated indoor air quality research back every sensor we ship. See the full spec sheet on View Plus.

Every room, covered

One monitor doesn't tell the whole story

Air quality varies room by room and floor by floor. Our lineup covers the rooms where your family spends the most time.

Bedroom — CO₂ while you sleep

Closed bedrooms regularly hit CO₂ levels of 1,500 ppm or higher overnight, well above the 1,000 ppm threshold linked to grogginess and poor focus.

Basement — radon, the silent threat

Radon seeps up from the ground and concentrates on lower floors. Colorless and odorless, it's the #1 cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.

Living room — where it all converges

VOCs from furniture, PM2.5 from cooking, humidity swings — your main living space is where the broadest view of your family's air health matters most.

Home office — stay sharp all day

Poor ventilation and rising CO₂ in a closed office quietly reduce cognitive performance long before it feels obvious.

The experience

Home air quality data you can use

The free Airthings app turns raw sensor data into real-time alerts and clear next steps, with long-term trends so you can see what's actually changed in your home.

The View Plus is also Calm Tech Certified, designed to inform without demanding your attention. A low-energy e-ink display shows the values you care about, and a motion-activated glow indicator turns green, yellow, or red so you can read your air quality at a glance, no phone required.

FAQ

Common questions about Airthings

Who makes Airthings, and are they a legitimate company?

Airthings is a Norwegian company founded in 2008 by scientists from CERN, headquartered in Oslo, with monitors used in more than 300,000 homes.

Are Airthings monitors accurate?

Each monitor uses laboratory-grade sensors: a passive diffusion chamber and alpha spectrometry for radon, a laser-scattering particle counter calibrated against a GRIMM reference instrument for PM2.5, and an NDIR sensor for CO₂.

What's Airthings' return and warranty policy?

Orders placed at airthings.com come with a 45-day money-back guarantee. Every monitor also carries a 1-year standard warranty, plus a free 5-year extended warranty on authorized purchases if you register within 30 days.

Can I use HSA or FSA funds to buy an Airthings monitor?

Yes. Through a partnership with Truemed, eligible monitors and the Renew air purifier can be purchased at airthings.com using pre-tax HSA or FSA dollars.

Do I need a monitor in every room?

Air quality risks vary by room. Radon concentrates in basements, CO₂ builds up in closed bedrooms and offices overnight, and VOCs and particulates gather in living spaces. Airthings' lineup is built to cover the rooms that matter most.

What does the Airthings app do?

The free Airthings app turns live sensor data into real-time alerts and long-term trends. View Plus also pairs with a Calm Tech Certified e-ink display and glow indicator, so you can check your air quality without opening the app.
