Radon monitoring at home

Radon is a colorless and odorless radioactive gas that can silently infiltrate homes. The EPA cites long-term radon exposure as the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.

Where should I place my monitor?
Radon enters the home through cracks or gaps in the foundation, and can build up indoors over time. Place your monitor in the lowest lived-in level of your home.
How much radon is too much?
Take action if levels consistently exceed 4 pCi/L. Consider mitigation for levels between 2–4 pCi/L. Health Canada recommends taking action if your long-term radon level is at or above 200 Bq/m3
How soon will I get results?
Radon levels fluctuate daily, and tend to be higher in winter. Monitoring over several weeks, ideally for 30 days or more during the colder months, will provide you with a reliable long-term average.
How can I reduce my radon levels?
Improve ventilation and seal entry points and then monitor to see the effects. If radon is still high, consider contacting a mitigation professional. Professional mitigation can reduce radon levels by up to 95%.
