Preserving the past, protecting the future: How Château des ducs de Bretagne tackles radon

The Château des ducs de Bretagne is the emblematic monument of its region. With structures dating back as far as the 15th century, managing such a historic site comes with a unique set of challenges. It also calls for a big focus on the over 1.4 million annual visitors and 80 employees.

The hidden challenge: Radon

Because the castle is constructed from granite and situated in a granitic region, the team faced a natural but serious challenge: radon levels in several rooms. Sébastien Loiret, the building technician at the castle since 2024, knew they needed a robust monitoring solution.

Preserving the past, monitoring the present

In a protected historical monument, you cannot simply drill holes through ancient walls to run cables. This led Sébastien Loiret to Airthings.

My favorite thing is is the wireless aspect because I work in a historic monument and I can’t break through historical walls, says Sébastien.

Data-driven peace of mind

Today, 13 wireless sensors are distributed across offices and public areas. The installation was seamless, and the data is now more accessible than ever:

  • For Management: Centralized dashboards allow for real-time monitoring of the building's climate.

  • For Employees: Staff can check the air quality in their specific work zones via dedicated links or QR codes in breakrooms.

Through this blend of 500-year-old architecture and 21st-century air quality monitoring, the Château des ducs de Bretagne ensures that history is preserved while the people within it remain safe.
