What does the View Plus actually measure?

The Airthings View Plus monitors seven indoor air quality factors at once: radon, particulate matter (PM2.5), carbon dioxide (CO₂), VOCs, humidity, temperature, and air pressure. It is the most comprehensive consumer air quality monitor Airthings makes.

Radon — the #1 reason most people buy
Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the US, according to the EPA, and the leading cause among non-smokers. The View Plus measures radon from 0 to 500 pCi/L using a passive diffusion chamber and alpha spectrometry, with the Airthings app flagging anything at or above the EPA action level of 4 pCi/L.
PM2.5 — wildfire smoke and gas stoves
PM2.5 is fine particulate matter small enough to reach deep into the lungs. The View Plus uses a laser-scattering particle counter calibrated against a GRIMM reference instrument, with the Airthings app alert threshold set at 25 μg/m³. Typical sources include wildfire smoke, gas cooking, and candles.
CO₂ — the reason you wake up groggy
CO₂ above 1000 ppm impairs sleep and concentration, according to Harvard and LBNL research. The View Plus uses an NDIR sensor with a 400–5000 ppm range, and the Airthings app flags readings at or above 1000 ppm — a level closed bedrooms regularly hit overnight.
VOCs — what your cleaning spray leaves behind
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are airborne chemicals released by cleaning products, paint, new furniture, and adhesives. The View Plus measures total VOCs in parts per billion, with the Airthings app flagging concentrations at or above 250 ppb.
Temperature & Humidity — sleep and focus zones
Indoor temperature affects sleep quality, alertness, and mood. Indoor humidity above 60% encourages mold growth and dust mites, while levels below 30% cause dry skin and throat irritation.
Air pressure — the radon connection
When outdoor air pressure drops, radon gas is drawn up more easily from the soil beneath your home, meaning pressure and radon levels often rise and fall together. The View Plus tracks pressure, helping you see the connection in the Airthings app.

Radon, in three questions

The risk you can't see, smell, or feel

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes from the ground and enters homes through cracks, floors, and foundations. The only way to know your home's level is to test for it.

Why measure radon at home?

You work hard to create a safe and happy home, but radon could be silently putting you and your family at risk. Radon is a naturally occurring, invisible gas that comes from the ground and can enter any home through cracks, floors, or foundations without any smell or warning. That makes radon a silent and invisible threat.

How radon affects your health

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, right after smoking. Living with high radon levels can be as harmful as smoking 10 cigarettes a day without even knowing it.

The EPA maintains that every home, regardless of location, should be tested for radon — even homes in the EPA's lower-risk Zone 3 counties have been measured well above the 4 pCi/L action level.

How to safeguard your home's future

Each home is unique when it comes to radon levels, so even neighboring houses can have very different readings. The only way to know your home's radon level is to test continuously, and the View Plus gives you both short-term and long-term averages directly in the Airthings app.

The EPA recommends testing for radon when buying or selling a home and, if levels are high, lowering them through mitigation. Document all test results and any mitigation taken — these can be valuable assets to have when selling.

Why indoor air matters

You spend 90% of your time indoors

According to the EPA, Americans spend roughly 90% of their time indoors, where the air can be up to five times more polluted than outdoor air. That makes the quality of your indoor air one of the largest day-to-day factors in your physical and mental health.

The View Plus monitors the seven indoor air quality factors that drive most of that risk, and the Airthings app turns each reading into a clear next step.

Built for real life at home

What can the View Plus help you fix?

Three of the most common everyday problems the View Plus measures — and what the Airthings app tells you to do about each one.

Airthings View Plus tracking pollen, humidity and VOCs for allergy and asthma triggers

Minimize allergy and asthma triggers

The View Plus and the Airthings app monitor the key indoor triggers behind seasonal allergies and asthma flare-ups.

  • Particulate matter — small airborne particles that can reach deep into the lungs.
  • Humidity — keep 30–60% to prevent mold and dust mites.
  • VOCs — airborne chemicals from household products that may cause irritation.
  • Pollen — local forecasts inside the Airthings app to plan ahead.

Enhance your sleep and performance

Monitor the indoor factors that quietly determine how well you sleep at night and how sharp you feel during the day.

  • CO₂ — high CO₂ from poor ventilation impairs sleep and mental performance, according to Harvard and LBNL.
  • Temperature — sleep best at 60–65°F, work best at 68–72°F.
  • VOCs — can cause headaches, fatigue, and poor concentration.

Protect from pollutants and wildfires

Track outdoor pollution that finds its way indoors during wildfire season, traffic spikes, and stagnant air days.

  • PM2.5 — smoke particles are particularly dangerous during wildfires.
  • CO₂ — monitor indoor levels to ensure good air quality when ventilation is limited.
  • VOCs — outdoor smoke can drive indoor VOCs upward when windows stay closed.

Where to place it

Where should you place the View Plus?

Place the View Plus in the room where your family spends the most time — typically the living room, kitchen, or main bedroom — at average breathing height and at least 3 feet from vents, fans, windows, or doors. Airthings recommends never placing the View Plus outdoors or in spaces above 85% humidity, which can permanently damage the radon sensor.

Living room or kitchen
Airthings recommends the room where the family gathers — this is where CO₂, VOCs from cooking, and PM2.5 from gas stoves matter most.
Main bedroom
Closed bedrooms regularly hit CO₂ levels of 1500 ppm or higher overnight, well above the 1000 ppm cognition threshold cited by Harvard and LBNL.
Lowest lived-in level
Radon concentrates on lower floors, so a finished basement or first-floor room gives the most accurate radon picture for your home.

Frequently asked questions

View Plus questions, answered

Does the Airthings View Plus detect radon?
Yes. The Airthings View Plus uses a passive diffusion chamber and alpha spectrometry to detect radon from 0 to 500 pCi/L, with accuracy of approximately 10% after 7 days and 5% after 2 months at 5.4 pCi/L. The Airthings app flags any reading at or above the EPA action level of 4 pCi/L.
Where should I place the View Plus for best results?
You can use the View Plus in any room indoors where you want to track air quality. Because it is Airthings' most comprehensive monitor, Airthings recommends placing it in rooms where the family gathers and spends time together — like the kitchen or the family room. That said, you can use it in other rooms to get a broad view of air quality. Never place the monitor outdoors or in conditions with over 85% humidity, as this can cause permanent damage to the radon sensor inside. For best results, avoid placing the View Plus within 3 feet (90 cm) of vents, fans, windows, or doors, since these sources of ventilation can skew readings. Place the device near where people spend time, at average breathing height, and never higher than 6 feet (182 cm). You can stand it on a surface or mount it on a wall using the screw holes in the backplate.
How do I know the measurements are accurate?
The nature of air and the measurement of its components means there is always room for small variations. Every air sensor manufacturer has to report the device's expected range of accuracy, which is one reason two devices — of the same or different brands — can be placed side by side and report somewhat different values. This does not mean either is defective; both may be reporting values within their range of accuracy. Airthings uses only reliable, proven technology in the View Plus: a proprietary radon sensor trusted by homeowners and professionals since 2011, a laser-based particulate sensor, and an NDIR carbon dioxide sensor. Check the View Plus product sheet on airthings.com for the accuracy range of each sensor. If you suspect your device is reporting inaccurate values, contact the Airthings support team.
Can I check my live View Plus air quality readings in the app from anywhere?
Yes. The View Plus connects to your home Wi-Fi network. With internet connectivity, you can access live readings from anywhere in the Airthings app, and you also receive timely notifications when air quality declines. You can use smart home systems like IFTTT and Homey to create home automation flows that use View Plus sensor readings as triggers.
What is the hub feature in View Plus, and why is it useful?
The hub feature allows the View Plus to extend its internet connectivity to Airthings Wave monitors, which on their own use only Bluetooth. Homeowners monitoring the air in multiple rooms with a mix of View and Wave monitors can use the Airthings app to link their Wave devices to the View Plus hub. Beyond bringing internet access to the Wave readings, this enables timely air quality notifications and extends the Wave monitor's battery life.
Do I need the Airthings app to use the View Plus?
Yes. The View Plus requires the free Airthings app (iOS or Android) to function, including initial setup, alerts, and trend data. The on-device e-ink display also shows live readings without opening your phone. An Airthings account requires only an email address and a name.
How long does the View Plus battery last?
The Airthings View Plus runs for up to 2 years on six AA batteries, depending on Wi-Fi router type and sensor reporting interval. You can also run it on USB-C power for always-on operation, which also unlocks the hub function for connecting Airthings Wave devices.
Does the View Plus work with Alexa, Google Home, and HomeKit?
The Airthings View Plus integrates with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT, and Homey to trigger smart home routines based on sensor readings. Apple HomeKit is not currently supported. Live readings remain available through the Airthings app regardless of which voice assistant you use.
What warranty comes with the View Plus?
The View Plus ships with a standard warranty plus a free 5-year extended warranty available when you register the device on airthings.com within 30 days of purchase. Registration is free and does not affect your statutory rights.
